About Us
The Wits Palestine Solidarity Committee (WitsPSC) of South Africa was formed at the end of 2005.
We are a secular student initiative to promote the Palestinian cause on the campus of the University
of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) and to join the national, as well as international,
anti-apartheid movement against the State of Israel.
As students of a post-apartheid regime we see it as our responsibility to stand with all those who are still engaged with liberating themselves from racist paradigms. Our main focus thus far has been the drawing of parallels between the South African and Israeli apartheids as well as the parallels between the two liberation struggles. The organisation was formed with the primary intentions of raising awareness and creating partnerships with people in the Holy Land who are engaged in their struggle for liberation and freedom. However, during our first six months we have heard the calls from Palestinian grassroot organisations; academics; filmmakers and artists for a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions(BDS) campaign, it is this call that has lead the WitsPSC to take an active role in the International BDS campaign and the academic boycott in particular. Whilst we have a core-committee that is responsible for fiscal, administration and organisational duties, the organisation’s goal is to become a radical student movement driven by the youth of the new South Africa. more... |
